San Francisco These pics were taken at the Embarcadero and Alcatraz in San Francisco on September 5, 2003. I took a trip to San Francisco for my friend Joel's wedding. While in the area, I took a day trip to Pier 39 and Alcatraz. Pier 39, famous for it's Sea Lions, is a pretty cool shopping and restaurant area on the Bay. We also say a WWII submarine, and a transport ship. Tours were offered of each vessel, but we didn't have time, as we were on our way to Alcatraz! I learned how Alcatraz was taken over by American Indians in protest in the 70s. I learned how prisoners lived in the cellblock. I learned about Alcatraz's most famous resident, Al Capone. I also learned that solitary confinement is really, really quiet. The island is barely 20 minutes from the city by boat, and offered great views of both the skyline and the Golden Gate bridge.
